You should definitely plan in a visit to the centuries-old town of Hallstatt on your holiday in Salzkammergut. Its unique location between Salzberg and Lake Hallstatt, its numerous sights and picturesque village scenery impress tourists from all over the world. Its fascination is so far-reaching that the town has even been replicated true to the original in China.

Travelling to Hallstatt

You can get to Hallstatt either by land or water: the boat trip from Hallstatt station to the opposite side of the lake from where you have the most beautiful view over Hallstatt is highly recommended. You cannot drive up to Hallstatt station but it can be reached by train or on foot. If you would like to drive by car via the west bank directly to Hallstatt, follow the parking guidance system.

Exploring Hallstatt

Leaning up against the mountainside and nestled along the banks of Lake Hallstatt, the small town of Hallstatt is revealed to be a unique ensemble of old houses and churches. Explore the almost 7,000-year history of the old saltworks town by viewing its many sights.

Hallstatt World Heritage Museum

Delve into Hallstatt's history, which is presented in detail using multimedia at the World Heritage Museum. Among other things you can see finds from the Early Ice Age, which were of such great importance that they gave their name to an entire epoch: the Hallstatt period.

Hallstatt "Bone House", parish church and cemetery

More than 1,200 skulls, with more than 600 of them artistically painted and sorted by families, are stored in the world-famous Hallstatt "Bone House". Next to this, you can view the Late Gothic catholic parish church with its impressive winged altar and the cemetery set up on rock terraces all around it.

You can get from Hallstatt up into the Hallstatt high valley using the Panorama funicular railway where the oldest salt mine in the world is situated next to the famous prehistoric burial ground. Today's show mine offers fascinating and informative experiences, particularly for families. From the top station there are numerous opportunities for hikes and walks, for example along the Brine Pipeline Trail that leads as far as Ebensee, up to the Plassen or on the World Heritage Trail.

Hallstatt Skywalk

A spectacular view awaits you on the "World Heritage View" viewing platform. From 360 metres up you glance directly over the rooftops of Hallstatt, the dark blue fjord lake and the towering mountains on all sides.
