Ossuary: This worldwide unique ossuary has been existing since the 12th Century. Because of the limited space in the churchyard, the graves were usually opened after 10 to 15 years to clear a space for new burials. The remains found their last resting place in the bone house. At the beginning of the eighteenth century, it became a tradition to paint the skulls lovingly before bringing them to the ossuary. 610 out of the 1200 skulls to be seen in the bone house are painted. The last skull was brought there in 1995. All those who want to remain that way for posterity nowadays, have to make this decision before they die.

It is no coincidence that Bad Ischl is also called an “Imperial City”. During the regency of Emperor Franz Joseph I, the “Kaiservilla” (imperial villa) in Bad Ischl became his summer residence. Thus, the small village has been sort of the second capital of the Habsburg Monarchy in the summer months and the members of the high society have been eager to spend their summer holiday in Bad Ischl – like His Majesty. A hint of this special imperial and royal flair is somehow still present in the town.
