The Salzkammergut lakes paradise, perfect for swimming and water sports
Fun in the water on the Salzkammergut's crystal clear lakes
Alongside Carinthia, the Salzkammergut is right at the top of the holiday regions in Austria when it comes to the country's most beautiful swimming lakes. A day's swimming with the family therefore definitely should not be missing from your holiday in Salzkammergut. Enjoy the sun, water and nature at one of the swimming spots or in one of the lidos at the Salzkammergut's numerous lakes or explore the area on or under the water.
Bathing and swimming around Hotel Sommerhof
Lake Gosau with a view over the Dachstein glacier and just a distance away from Hotel Sommerhof reaches up to 20°C in peak summer. Chill out by one of the natural beaches or hire an electric boot to see the idyllic scenic landscape from the water. Swimming fun with water temperature up to 23°C awaits you about 14 kilometres away at Lake Hallstatt. Swim in the clear mountain water with a view over the stunning scenery of the world heritage site of Hallstatt. It is also worth taking trip to one of the large Salzkammergut lakes like Fuschlsee, Wolfgangsee, Attersee or Mondsee for a day's swimming where beautiful lidos offer everything you need for a successful day's swimming.
Lake Hallstatt swimming marathon
A highlight for professional swimmers is the Lake Hallstatt swimming marathon that takes place in the summer every year. Besides the long distance of 10 kilometres from the lido in Untersee/Bad Goisern to the Obertraun lido there is also a 2.1 kilometre long short distance.
Fishing fans will feel at home at the trout pond in Gosau where they can fish and unwind wonderfully by the water with a stunning view of the surrounding mountains. Fishing rods can be hired there from €3, you can also get an annual licence three for around €4 per person. On top of that you can also have your catch cooked on site.
Rafting, rowing and sailing
Salzkammergut offers all kinds of fun and variety on the water too. When rafting on the Traun between Bad Goisern and Bad Ischl, one of the most stunning white water stretches in the Salzkammergut, you are competing against currents and rollers. You can take things a bit more sedately with rowing or sailing. Sail across the lake in an electric boot or pedalo or get active with rowing: you can hire boats around Gosau both in Hallstatt and Obertraun by Lake Hallstatt and at Lake Gosau.
The Salzkammergut lakes are popular diving areas. As a result of their depth though underwater adventures should be enjoyed with great caution.
