Dachstein & Salzkammergut
Sights in Salzkammergut and the Dachstein region
The Dachstein Salzkammergut region impresses with a wealth of sights and day trip destinations beyond Gosau too. Experience the region that is rich in natural and cultural treasures on your holiday at Hotel Sommerhof.
A mountain adventure world on the Krippenstein
The Krippenstein in the Dachstein massif is a very popular destination all year round, be it for winter sports enthusiasts or summer day trippers. The Krippenstein-Dachstein cable car takes you up to 2,100 metres in no time at all, where you can experience a great deal. You won't just love the panoramic view but also the 5fingers and Welterbespirale viewing platforms and the Dachstein shark. The top station is also the starting point for hikes and via ferratas in the summer, while skiers, freeriders and ski tourers can go wild here in the winter.
Explore the fascinating inner worlds of the Dachstein accompanied by an experienced cave guide. Spectacular ice formations await you in the Dachstein ice cave where the huge Mammut Cave alone impresses due to its immense size. More than 60 kilometres of passageways have been explored, approx. 1 kilometre of them is accessible to visitors. The world of caves is completed by the Koppenbrüller cave, which is situated in the valley and can be reached via a hiking trail. Cultural tip: ice concerts taking place in the Dachstein ice cave every Friday in August.
Gmunden am Traunsee
Visit the film locations of the "Schlosshotel Orth" TV series in Gmunden. Walk from the scenically situated lake castle over the esplanade by Traunsee into the centre of Gmunden as far as Rathausplatz with the old town hall and glockenspiel where cafés and outdoor dining areas invite you to take an indulgent break. Another option is a visit to the Gmundner Keramik ceramics workshop with factory outlet prices.
Grünau in the Alm valley
From Gmunden you can continue to Grünau in the Alm valley, which has several scenic gems: the protected Lake Alm, the Ödsee lakes and the Cumberland wildlife park with indigenous animal species.
Head towards Styria to reach the Ausseerland, which has been the (chosen) home to politicians, artists and writers since the 19th century and still is today, just like other places in Salzkammergut. Hike around Lake Altausseer See, take a trip up to the Loser or a boat trip over Lake Grundlsee, Lake Toplitz and Lake Kammersee or visit the "Lebkuchen" gingerbread bakery in Bad Aussee. At the end of May, the Daffodil Festival with its flower parade attracts national attention way beyond the lake.
The Mondseeland region looks back on a long history that dates back to the Early Stone Ages and the Bronze Age. There are still witnesses of these eras today, for example in the remains of buildings on stilts in the village of See between the Mondsee and Attersee lakes. It is recommended that you take a look at the St. Michael's abbey church, the pile dwelling museum and the local museum in the main village of Mondsee.
Besides the numerous day trip destinations in Dachstein Salzkammergut you should also not miss out on a visit to Bad Ischl, Hallstatt and the salt mines in Hallstatt, Hallein or Altaussee (tip for families). Stroll through the picturesque towns and villages, enjoy the tranquillity of nature and get to know one of Austria's most beautiful holiday regions first hand. Right in the middle: Hotel Sommerhof in Gosau. The team at the Sommerhof will be happy to accept your booking or no-obligation enquiry for your holiday in Salzkammergut!
